IN OUR BOOK IN THE 6TH LEVEL THERE´S A FANTASTIC STORY...
DID YOU KNOW...?
DID YOU KNOW...?
KIMANI MARUGE was the oldest pupil in the world.
He was born in Kenya in 1919. When he was seven, there were no free schools. Kimani helped his dad and he couldn´t go to school. His father said: "I´m sorry, there isn´t any money". He was sad many times because he couldn´t help the animals when they were sick.
In 2003, there was a new law in Kenya: free education for everyone. At that time, Kimani was 84 years old!
-I want to go to school!- he said. I want to be a vet!
Kimani started school and he walked there with his grandchildren. He was a very good pupil!
In 2004, Kimani was in the records books. Lots of older people were at school then but he was the oldest primary pupil in the world.
In 2005, he was at the United Nations to talk about free education. He said:
-More than 100,000 poor children in the world can´t go to school. Free primary education is very important. Please help the children.
There were lots of reporters at the United Nations. They all wanted to know about Mr. Maruge:
-Why do you go to school when you are so old?
-BECAUSE YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN.
